Despite a mix up over time zones with his management (when I first called, he was stuck in traffic), and then no landline (though this is the rare show that sounds good on a cel phone), and then no guitar (just a piano), Devendra Banhart phones in a tune or two from Topanga, CA, an unincorporated neighborhood in western Los Angeles County. Located in the Santa Monica Mountains and occupying Topanga Canyon, it is bounded on three sides by park or conservancy lands, and on the south by the Pacific Ocean and a small strip of Malibu, which is the main community to the west. On the east is Pacific Palisades.
