Davis Lee Hooker (A John Henry Memorial, ...Worms, Rob Walmart, the Watery Graves of Portland, etc.) phones it in from Underwood, MN, playing through the entirety of his new, yet-to-be-released album 'Dark City, Dark Town'.

More than a singer, more than a songwriter, Davis creates songs that create their own worlds, a little shy, a little painful, but as satisfying as good books. I remember the first time I listened to Will Oldham, Palace Music's 'Gulf Shores' 7"; it felt like this. Something so familiar and yet so striking. Davis's songs have always held a hushed majesty, but giving up the A John Henry Memorial pseudonym has freed him to imbue them with a fresh new poignancy.
