Darren Hayman (Hefner) Download mp3 | Stream mp3
Darren Hayman (most notably of Hefner; also of the French; Hayman, Watkins, Trout, and Lee; and the Stereo Morphonium), his ukulele, and his dog phone it in from London, England. Hefner were British underground pop icons, revered by John Peel and not less than a few other slavishly devoted fans (myself included). Casual and arch, Darren's Billy Bragg-esque laments about modern life in the UK range from the quotidian to the smutty, and are always as funny as they are affecting. Three songs just ain't enough!

The introduction to his second song is also one the best moments captured on this show:

"This song is called 'Gabriel in the Airport'...And it's about Peter Gabriel...in an airport. And Peter Gabriel is very tired, but he still wants to do good things for the world. And in this song I'm saying to him, 'It's OK, Peter, you can take a rest.'"
