Sharon Van Etten phones it in from a cordless phone in the basement of Northeast Kingdom in Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY. Her voice, however, is so pure it cuts through phone static like a warm knife through butter. (Static? What static?) Her songs are equally effortless, betraying a sophistication and charm you wouldn't normally associate with the term 'lo-fi', though the same earnestness and fragility that you would. No artifice like a lot of other neo-folkies, Sharon is the Real Deal, a true folk musician, a singer-songwriter with the emphasis on both... So good it's hard not to gush. Excellent debut album out now on Greg Weeks' Language of Stone label!
